The nineteenth century was a period of great transition in the Western understanding of Japanese art. In order to illustrate the shifts in Westerners’ perceptions, this paper examines the collection of over 3,000 Japanese paintings formed by William Anderson (1842–1900), resident in Japan in the 1870s as a government-hired foreigner, the so-called o-yatoi gaikokujin.

Note: this talk will be followed by an Apero in the Lichthof of the university hall
