JADE AND CHINESE CULTURE: AN ART HISTORICAL VIEW

It has been said that «of all materials in the world of Chinese antiquities, jade best exemplified the essential aspects of Chinese culture and aesthetic appreciation». Such love for jade and its significance is not limited to antiquity, but has lasted for thousands of years till today. This lecture will explore the profound and extremely varied relationship between jade and Chinese culture.

Wu Hung is Harrie A. Vanderstappen Distinguished Service Professor in Chinese Art History, Director of the Center for the Art of East Asia, Consulting Curator of the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago. He is also an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the author and editor of more than 20 books and anthologies on traditional and contemporary Chinese art, including «Monumentality of Early Chinese Art and Architecture» (1995), «The Double Screen: Medium and Representation in Chinese Painting» (1996), «Remaking Beijing: Tiananmen Square and the Creation of a Political Space» (2006), and «Making History: Wu Hung on Contemporary Art» (2008).
